Private Wilfred Adams Elwood

 

Wilfred Adams Elwood was born on 5 August 1891 at Steeple, County Antrim, the third of six children of coachman William Elwood and his wife Jane (née Scholes). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Templepatrick, County Antrim, with his parents and two surviving siblings, and working as a law clerk.

Elwood enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 16 November 1914 (No.1347).

On 12 January 1915, however, he was discharged, being 'not likely to become an efficient soldier' within three months of enlistment (paragraph 392 iii(c), King's Regulations).

Elwood later applied for a pension, which was granted on 30 October 1918, due to 'paralysis' aggravated by his service, and 'deafness' resulting from his service.

After his discharge Elwood returned to Templepatrick. On 12 June 1918 he married Sara Mary Greer at Mountjoy Presbyterian Church, Coppagh, County Tyrone.

He later worked as a clerk in the Ballyclare Employment Exchange.
